LINCOLN PARK RESIDENCE

Acanthus Award Winner for Residential Architecture 2019

The inspiration is of a Mayfair townhouse, double-wide, presenting a formal face to the street. Built in the heart of Lincoln Park, the new residence and its quiet splendor are warmly embraced by neighboring townhouses. On one of the few residential blocks of Chicago without an alley, the building uniquely requires a front driveway, which the design incorporates while maintaining the traditional elegance of its tripartite facade. The first floor is reached at the top of limestone stairs through an Ionic portico and large center-knobbed door recalling 18th century hardware placement. The three-arched Living Room windows are separated by carved limestone pilasters carrying the first floor (frieze); the design is inspired by the work of Thomas Cubitt in Belgrave Square. Hand molded, sand-faced brick with wiped joints and limestone surrounds complete the composition. The rear of the residence includes a children’s play terrace, which provides the area for the pool in the rear garden. On the interiors, fluted Doric columns mark the entry to the Living and Dining Rooms and the enfiladed doorways lead to the informal living area and then to the rear terrace. The panelized four-story concentric stair is inspired by Georgian trim paneling. A rooftop kitchen and pergola complete the exterior space.
